Protecting metal against corrosion can be achieved in various ways. For industrial use, choices often include hot-dip galvanizing, electrolytic galvanizing, thermal spraying (TSA or TSZ), lacquers and coatings, or a combination of these methods.

Coatings and lacquers can be applied or touched up relatively easily on-site without the need for specialized equipment (which is required for most galvanizing methods). Liquid coatings and lacquers are applied by brush, roller, or spray, after which they cure through methods such as air drying, physical drying, or 2K reactive curing.
Providing corrosion-resistant properties through traditional thermal or electrolytic galvanizing methods is considerably more complex. This involves dipping pre-treated steel into a zinc bath to create a protective layer. While it is a proven method for protecting metal against corrosion, its labor-intensive nature means it is not suitable for every steel application nor always cost-effective.
Thermal spraying is applied via a flame gun and is the application method closest to coatings and lacquers. In addition to a zinc layer (TSZ), an aluminum layer (TSA) can also be applied using this method. The corrosion behavior is comparable to hot-dip galvanizing.
As previously mentioned, one form of corrosion protection does not exclude another. In fact, a combination is often preferred. For optimal corrosion protection, galvanizing and TSA are frequently combined with coatings and lacquers. The galvanized base layer is naturally difficult to damage. The lacquer or coating applied on top is more sensitive to damage but also much easier to repair if the situation requires it. (If a lacquer or coating is damaged, it can generally be touched up quickly without having to treat the entire surface again.)
