European oak wood naturally has a yellow-brown color. With stain, you can also give oak wood a dark oak appearance. Can this be achieved with waterborne stain, or would it be better to choose from one of the other stain variants? The answer is below.
Options for dark oak stain
A dark oak appearance can be achieved in several ways:
- Applying waterborne stain to oak wood. Waterborne stain can be applied to oak wood for a dark oak color finish, but this is not preferred. This is due to the raising of the wood fiber. Be aware of this;
- Applying a dark waterborne stain color to a similar type of wood. There are various types of wood that share characteristics with oak wood. One of them is iroko wood, which has almost the same yellow-brown color and the same specific weight as European oak wood. The wood grain of iroko is less pronounced, but with narrower planks and other narrow wood cuts, the origin is almost indistinguishable;
- Opting for a different type of stain. Spray stain is commonly used on oak wood. With a thinner, you can adjust the color gradient exactly as you envision. For a shadow effect with subtle (dark) color transitions, you can also opt for a patina stain. Application of this type of stain is done by rubbing with a non-fuzzy cloth moistened with stain.
