Therm-O-Signal: temperature sensitive paints for several special applications

With the Therm-O-Signal paint system, Lakfabriek Korthals has a special range of temperature sensitive paints in its portfolio. These paints change color after reaching a pre-defined temperature. This way you are more aware of crisis situations and can react faster and more adequately. In this article you can read for which applications in the process industry and offshore the color sensitive paints of Korthals can be used. And why you have a flawless system with Therm-O-Signal.

Temperature sensitive paint makes heat visible

The idea behind temperature sensitive paints is as simple as it is effective. The paints change color when a predetermined temperature range is exceeded, so you can see the actual threat at a glance. The Therm-O-Signal tempetature sensitive paint can be applied to existing thermally insulated housings.

Real chance of overheating (petro) chemical installations

Many chemical and petrochemical companies, both onshore and offshore, use critical, thermal installations, such as chemical reactors. There is always the risk of a thermal runaway reaction. During the production process it is necessary to maintain a constant high temperature. This process can be disrupted due to technical, human and organizational factors. In short: there is a real chance of overheating.

Despite the fact that many of these companies hold high priority on risk management, it is often a challenge for them to properly monitor excessive heat generation. Using Therm-O-Signal paints the chance of overheating remains, but this will be noticed at a much earlier stage. In this way you prevent overheating from taking on disastrous proportions, because with this paint system you can:

  • Make weaknesses in walls immediately visible, so that maintenance can take place much more focused, timely and cost-efficient;
  • Make heat visible in pipelines in factories, so that it is clear at a glance where the overheated process pipes are located and employees do not accidentally touch them or disrupt the other production processes;
  • Save valuable time starting evacuations of personnel.

Temperature sensitive paints up to 600 degrees Celsius

The temperature sensitive paints from Korthals are always irreversible. The color change takes place at temperatures between 145ºC and 600ºC. The paints are mainly used in (petro) chemical installations.

Direct heat contact at these temperatures can have far-reaching consequences such as injury. This is of course also dependent on the positioning of the heat source. An employee in an industrial environment who works within an arm’s length from the heat source runs more risks than someone on a footbridge meters away.

Several of our paints change color at different temperatures, enabling a gradual monitoring of the temperature progression. This is truly unique in the world.

Measuring systems are not flawless, temperature sensitive paints are!

Both onshore and offshore there are several ways to establish (the formation of) heat in systems. For example, think of:

  • Thermal cameras that keep an eye on critical places with a risk of extreme heat formation or fire hazard;
  • Dataloggers and temperature controllers, measurement and intervention systems for industrial temperature control and monitoring, with which heat developments are closely monitored.

Nevertheless, it is possible that the cameras or the control systems do not function properly. For example because of a bug or a problem with an electrical component, so that the devices are no longer controlled properly. Then overheating is lurking.

Temperature sensitive paints are full of technical ingenuity, but never fail at the moment suprême. There is no power supply required, there are no disruptive factors that can affect the operation of the measurement and intervention system (software errors, hacking) and the temperature sensitive paint leaves little room for human error. In other words: it is a flawless system.

Safer with temperature sensitive Therm-O-Signal paints

With our temperature sensitive paints you keep the formation of heat under control. Do not leave your business processes and the safety of your employees to chance. With Therm-O-Signal paint you have something very special in your hands.
