What is Therm-O-Signal?

The Therm-O-Signal paint system contributes to safer industrial and (petro) chemical plants. This temperature indicating paint changes color in order to take preventive action when there is an imminent threat of overheating. The speed at which the color changes and warns you is a major benefit of this paint system.

Preferably, processing is done by spray application to ensure the best flow capacity. In doing so, one can immediately apply the topcoat (even on hot substrates, which we don’t recommend, by the way). Optionally, the paint can be applied with a brush.

Therm-O-Signal is available in two types of paints: irreversible and reversible.

  • Irreversible; the temperature range of this paint starts from 145 ºC to 600 ºC.
  • Reversible; the temperature range of this paint starts from -10 ºC to 80 ºC.

Some products handle multiple color indicators at different temperatures.

For outdoor application on sand-blasted steel Briosil 6 7360P primer is available, a zinc rich primer with great corrosion-resistant properties and heat-resistant up to 600 ºC.

Applications

No, you don’t need Briosil primer. We advise not to use this primer on stainless steel, because the stainless steel is affected by the zinc containing primer. Instead, we advise to blast the stainless steel before applying the Therm-O-Signal paint directly on the stainless steel.

In our technical datasheets the theoretical efficiency is given in number of m2/L. When it comes to spray application, the real efficiency is about 60% of the theoretical value. For brush and roller application the real efficiency is about 90% of the theoretical value.

As an example, our Briosil primer 6/7360P has a theoretical efficiency of 8 m2/L. The real efficiency then becomes (8 x 0,6 =) 4,8 m2/L. For spray and roller application the real efficiency becomes (8 x 0,9 = 7,2) m2/L .

Yes you can. If the paint system is still in good condition, you need to roughen the current Therm-O-Signal paint with sandpaper before applying the new one.

If the surface is rusty with loss of primer and topcoat, the surface should be blasted again until all rust is removed. If blasting isn’t possible you can also do manual/mechanical derusting. This repair can be done locally. Briosil primer should be applied on the treated parts. After several hours of drying, the Therm-O-Signal topcoat can be applied on top of the primer.

If the primer is still in good condition, then the surface can be rubbed with sandpaper and a new layer of the Therm-O-Signal can be applied.

If the primer and the Therm-O-Signal topcoats are still in good condition you should only rub the parts with sandpaper that have changed in colour and repaint these parts with the Therm-O-Signal topcoat you wish to apply.

The dry primer layer thickness of the Briosil primer 6/7360P should be 70 μm for ideal protection. In case you prefer spray application, then apply two thin layers of 35 μm.

The recommended dry layer thickness of our Therm-O-signal topcoats is 40-50 μm. In case you prefer spray application, then apply two thin layers of 20-25 μm. It is not recommended, to apply one thick layer of 40-50 μm by spray, as it involves a high risk of sagging.

Please note that excessive use of our primer and topcoat will result in boiling points during the curing process.

Many times, coated objects are too big to cure in practical circumstances. In this case coated objects will cure once the object has been put into service. When in service, usually temperatures of 150 °C and higher are obtained. After being exposed at temperatures of 150 °C for 8 hours the paint film will be fully cured. The time between coating application and heating up may take several months. In the meantime, the paint film protects against water and light influence.

Adhesion is best on sanded steel surfaces (2,5 SA). If blasting is not possible the surface should be rubbed with very coarse sandpaper. Do not use Briosil primer on smooth steel, as there is a greater risk of complete loss of adhesion after heating. Iron or zinc phosphatation isn’t recommendable either, as loss of adhesion occurs at 400 °C.

The Briosil primer is not to be used on corrosion resistant steel either. See also the FAQ about stainless steel.
